DESCRIPTION:
Rare antique wood / plywood and painted gesso "Summer" folding fireplace
screen. Romantic, fantasy imagery of castle, serpentine tress and rolling hills
with sun / moon on a three section mantle fireplace screen. Likely from the
1920's (based on similar online records), these types of screens were used as
decorative art in front of the fireplaces when not in use during the summer
months. Cottage decor. Art Deco and Art Nouveau influences to design. Back of
screen is plywood. Has a wire on the back where previous owner had it mounted
on the wall...it does holds its own as artwork.
DIMENSIONS:
32.5" tall x 40" wide (when fully extended. Each side leaf is 8" and the
center is 24" wide.
CONDITION:
There is much craquelure over the entire surface....which offers a wonderful
patina to the piece. There re some missing chunks of the layered gesso
treatment in spots. One hinge has been replaced. Uneven coloring. Would need
restoration to return it to something that resembled its original condition or
a lighter restoration to keep the patina but fix a few of the more obvious
chips to the surface.
